New Face of Leadership on the RISE

Where have you been!?

That’s a question that we have gotten a lot lately and after 2020 rocked our world (like many many others) we thought we would send you an update (1 of 3). Here we go!

RISE TOGETHER former leader and Executive Director, Anthony Alvarado, moved on from RT’s staff after nearly 8 years to serve as Chairman of the Board and pursue new directions in support of his family. As the organization’s first-ever Executive Director, Anthony built a strong team, fostered a culture of passion and excellence, and transitioned RT to new heights of sustainability.

After Anthony’s departure, the Board of Directors set out to find someone with the right vision and experience to lead the organization through this next phase of RISE TOGETHER’s evolution.  We are delighted to announce that we have found that leader. Nadine Machkovech will be serving in the role of Executive Director (applause welcome).

Nadine began her career here at RISE TOGETHER back in 2014 as a volunteer street team coordinator. Since, she has graced the TEDx stage, was profiled in FORBES with her team, received national survivor advocate recognition from the National Safety Council, known as a lifesaver with Bellin Health, and certified as a peer recovery coach through CCAR. She is a nationally sought-after master-level speaker with over 1,500 hours of teaching under her belt and has created measurable social change with her truth-telling abilities, leadership skills, and passionate advocacy. Today, she is dedicated to building a life centered around self-care, service, and connecting others to their greater purpose in life.

As a person in long-term recovery, she has found her purpose in an ever-growing platform for good. Her experience, perseverance, and enthusiasm are a strong foundation for her new leadership role. She carries this responsibility with a great amount of passion in hopes that these efforts will help future generations aspire toward the achievement of their future visions and life-long goals.

Nadine is passionate about spending time with her family, traveling, and creating lifelong memorable experiences. In her own words:

“Since joining Rise Together back in 2014, it has always been a mission of mine to help develop and implement programming for young people that I wish I would’ve had access to while growing up. I have found great purpose in creating a safe space where young people feel they are heard, seen, and supported regardless of who they are or what they’ve been through. We all deserve to feel valued.”

Please join us in welcoming Nadine in her new role as Executive Director.  If you have questions or comments as we chart our course for the next phase, please let us know.  We remain committed to the same values and programs that have served communities and made a difference for young people for the past 7 years, and look forward to what’s to come.

It is my honor to introduce myself as the Executive Director at RISE TOGETHER and to offer some important updates about our continued service to the community.

“Rise Together holds a special place in my heart because it was the first organization I came to know when I moved to Appleton, WI in 2013. RT was one of the very few statewide organizations to help dismantle the barriers around addiction recovery, by speaking out, bringing a voice to the voiceless, and demanding a seat at the table for those directly affected by substance use disorder. When I started volunteering for RT, I found much more than just “recovering addicts”—I found community, connection, and huge hearts at the center of all it stood for. It was clear to me that RT was unlike most of the organizing spaces and nonprofits I have worked with or been a part of; Rise Together is committed to not just addressing substance use prevention but also community transformation, systemic change, and holding a radical space for growth.

As I step out of my role as the VP of Operations and transition into the role of Executive Director, one of my main priorities is to continue fostering meaningful working relationships and collaborations that I helped to build in this position over the last several years. As we grow and acclimate to an ever-changing world, we will continue to strive towards organizational sustainability, adaptability, and perseverance.

I would also like to recognize the tremendous effort put forth by RT’s staff and board – all of which helped make our organization what it is today. Today, our board is made up of an amazing group of talented people including Anthony Alvarado serving as Board Chair, Jesse Heffernan as Co-Chair, Chris Wardlow as Secretary, and Wendy Vander Zanden as Treasurer. Their collective skills and passion are unmatched and I appreciate their dedication to our work and look forward to leading the organization to a bright future alongside other youth-serving organizations, countless recovery advocates, and youth voices.

I would also like to specifically thank my predecessor, Anthony Alvarado. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to get to know Anthony and work with him over the past nearly eight years. I am grateful for his continued dedication to this organization and those we serve as well as for his role as a mentor to me.

Since joining Rise Together back in 2014, it has always been a mission of mine to help develop and implement programming for young people that I wish I would’ve had access to while growing up. I have found great purpose in creating a safe space where young people feel they are heard, seen, and supported regardless of who they are or what they’ve been through. We all deserve to feel valued. It’s an unfortunate reality that our young people today face innumerable pressures and challenges, but I am optimistic that we will continue to make a positive and lasting impact through our collective work.”

Together,
